Meet Our Coaches

Brando MessineseBrando Messinese (Foil)

Coach Brando Messinese began fencing at age 10 and has been involved in fencing for over 19 years. He grew up at the Fides Livorno Club, the home club of Olympic Champions Baldini and Montano. He received his Fencing Master Degree in 2009 from the Accademia Nazionale di Scherma in Napoli.

He started coaching at Circolo Scherma Fides Livorno at age 16 as an assistant coach and later took over the head coach position. Under his team’s coaching, the students achieved outstanding results in their home country and international tournament such as World Cups and World Championships.

Brando moved to the United States in March 2013 and worked at Nyack Fencing academy. He has been coaching at the Manhattan Fencing Center as a full time coach since September 2015.

Tommaso Lari-2nd Place at the Cadet World Championships 2007, Belek Turkey; 2nd Place at Junior World Championship in Acireale Italy 2008; 1st place at Junior World Championships in Belfast

Edoardo Luperi- 2nd in Belfast in the Cadet World Championships 2009

Faith Ashton -3rd and 8th at RYCs and 10th at an SYC

Ryane Small-Gold Medal RYC (y-10), one 2nd and two 3rd places at RYCs

Malcolm Jackson- 27th at Junior Olympics 2015, earned B rating in 2015

 

Michele CaporizziMichele Caporizzi (Foil)

2013-14:  Placed fifth in the men’s foil at the NCAA Fencing Championship to earn second-team All-American honors. Posted a 17-6 record to place fourth at the NCAA Northeast Regional… Placed third to claim the bronze medal in men’s foil at the January North American Cup.

2012-13:  Placed ninth at the NCAA Fencing Championships in San Antonio, Texas and was named an All-American Honorable Mention … Placed fourth at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Placed 20th at the November North American Cup at Virginia Beach, Va.

Before St. John’s: Member of the Italian Junior National Team. Competed for the Mangiarotti Milano fencing club. Previously attended Bocconi University in Milan.

Personal: Came to St. John’s for its fencing team and to study in NY.
